short story from modern times
evenings were cool and filled with animal and insect noises. cars a distant tremor. it’s like a tiny saw on a tiney slab of wood. cicadas sawing back and forth repeatedly just as shadows lengthened. dogs barking. animals and insects. the shadows added a pleasant refridgeration then chilled as the shadows grew to engulf the streets. kids chattering or crying over the end of a day too soon. the only sound of civilization that filled the foreground. adults busy. silent at their chores. bees buzzed but it was the fire flies that surprised everybody.
