WHERE IS THE TYPICAL HIGH TECH CONSUMER is a great question for regis mckenna.

1970 when regis mckenna founded his own firm was the beginning of a new eara in silion valley. a true founding father regis mckenna brought his expertise to launching big new companies like apple around the time they bought all the high schools and libraries with massive discount and give-away programs.

then it was off to launch ”new” companies that needed real entrepreneurial help – - america online, compaq, electronic arts, genentech, intel, linear technology, lotus, microsoft, national semiconductor, silicon graphics, 3com and many others.

because regis mckenna goes by the numbers “valleylist” says let’s try some fun. a reasonable hypothesis could be high tech consumers are concentrated in the 10 largest cities in the u.s.a.

“valleylist” will tell you that #1 ranked new york city is where high tech consumers are found.

the most important observation for marketing people is that the #1 often has a very big lead. in this case new york has a nearly 5 million lead over #2 ranked los angeles.

the “martin” people like martin fey of abc [no relation to tina fey] will tell you that their #1 success “be near me” had nothing to do with high tech or target marketing. abc will tell you it takes a lot of real talent and a great song to really score. the regeneration tour 2009 including abc passed through silicon valley again this summer and found san jose nearly dead thanks to the reed / davis administration and their “hood” fantasy game.

MAYOR OF THE WEEK from belmont ca it’s city council and mayor david braunstein [dbraunstein@...]. population nearly 27,000 among the smallest non-high tech cities in silicon valley. famous for stunning views and address of wealthy and influential belmont looks good for a usgs observatory or even new space exploration technology. what’s most memorable after the views are the large malls

so why include belmont in silicon valley. because rich high tech people need a good place to live and enjoy life away from the cities. what belmont needs is a high tech anchor like a governement space or aeronautics project. belmont needs to stay residential and looks good for new investment as well.

try publications at a new york city library on the subject of the city of new york and try the chamber of commerce and they almost always mention the top rated nypd [new york police department].

for the “valleylist” marketing plan 10 largest cities in the u.s.a. it’s really the publications that make the difference. the new york area actually has more high tech jobs than silicon valley and of course a lot more people from the cybercities 2008 a complete state-by-state overview of the high tech industry.

the real excitement new york city the hub of the publishing industry. new york’s silicon alley high tech has really floundered because of the economic crisis. while somewhat popular in the late 90′s silicon alley has ended up like san francisco’s dot com area – - dot-com crash prompts more to leave san francisco according to usa today. everybody out after the bubble burst. will new york’s silicon alley make a come back – - unlikely says the new york times alive and well in silicon alley.

regis mckenna [no relation] started trying to contact me at the san francisco chronicle where i was working on consumer information services. “ok no relation yet what’s up” i thought. years later i find out that the message are supposed to be a serious effort to put together a business meeting. i thought “why would somebody that important be interested in me”. those messages were actually appointments to try to find a regis mckenna contact in the area. if not then get a ride to the hospital.  a message from an important person should lead to something. this year living in san jose i find the messages and appointments really don’t work. the problem appears to be a “group of people” who like to scam people and try to gain leverage by ruining everything. think fred lau and his recently cancelled “bad people society” project.

really meeting regis mckenna is a easy as picking up a phone.

the top 10 city marketing program is a new way for “valleylist” to go from 5 million readers to as many as possible. “valleylist” is targetting the u.s.a.’s biggest 10 cities and their publications libraries city government and chamber of commerce. people interested in internet marketing might want to try a top 10 marketing program of their own. in the meantime there isn’t anything to do except emulate “valleylist” and find new people and clients every day.
