SAN FRANCISCO HIGH TECH LEADERSHIP follows twitter. the winners circle should belong to the banking and finance people. it was difi [mayor dianne fienstein] who promised a world class business capital and a new “champs ellysees of the west” along market. from a street walker or tourist point of view i’d say travel and tourism bring in the most money. after sf’s dot-com bust high tech did their own diaspora.
“the city’s economy has become increasingly linked with the booming silicon valley technology economy. now san francisco has emerged both as a major regional center for high technology companies and a home to many thousands of skilled workers who are vital to these technology industries.” says the report san francisco’s recent economic performance.
the city is changed forever. the new skyline is defined by the “space heater bldg“ the new intercontinental hotel the new federal building and the museum of modern art. walk along montgomery street and you’ll find every bank in the world has a san francisco address. there’s the transamerica building still the city’s logo. meaningless without a google street view. busy with the san francisco hair salon index. i predict beatle haircuts.
market street most of all needs attention. it’s the dreary boarded up area from city hall to the powell street cable car area that drives people wild with disbelief. a sign of the times – - the boarded up strand theatre. worse the virgin megstore union square stands closed and empty. as a final blow to the city’s high tech image even the sony metreon is empty. just dark store fronts where sonystyle used to be.
“we’re not going to do fremont. and we don’t need no decoy police project” says the california state labor commission. problem is the police like everybody else need to make the front page every day of the week. if that’s not enough the authorities try to get over by sending everybody to the gay people. with a $522 million deficit a record 40,000 unemployed and 11 million sq feet of unused office space the city has big problems. mayor gavin newsom declared jobs number 1 priority during the state of the city address at the san francisco chamber of commerce. even though the city still ranks as the top tourist destination world wide tourists and conventioneers are confronted by thousands of homeless in the streets left over from the willie brown era.

a few of the worlds largest companies like chevron and bechtel as well as the city of san francisco and the federal government need a mention. the new ucsf medical center at mission bay helps make education san francisco’s second largest employment sector. high tech leadership still resides with the twitter people and the unlikely success of a facebook wanna be with lots of marketing muscle and messages going right to your cell phone. runner up is a different kind of publisher entirely. craigslist was first to internet classified advertising. latest spin is the craigslist foundation a “.org” strategy to involve local communities. these companies lead because they are still growing and defining the high tech future. old technology companies [dolby charles schwab visa lucas arts] that matured around the time of the atm are much larger yet don’t feel the need to come up with the latest technological “wow” moment.
san francisco is all political intrigue. newsom to city council
- – are you people at all serious about the legal case?
those of us interested in cultural imperialism went to library openings at bernal heights and potrero hill. time to say hi and shake hands with the likes of supervisor mark leno supervisor tom ammiano supervisor dave campos and the likes of supervisor eric mar. tim burton passed through town but didn’t make it to the library. i thought burton was stuck in new york at the moma tribute. instead the award winning filmmaker is rumored to have attended a special sf screening “alice in wonderland” at the castro theatre. michael douglas is scheduled for more sf action next week having dropped the old fatal attraction personna in favor of the cover of esquire magazine. yours truly only made it as far as the inside front cover. dubious achievement at its finest. the city has all libraries scheduled for digital retrofit. as usual the publications tell the story.

in the meantime it’s syndication mania. “valleylist” just added a new syndication version of “valleyist” on wordpress.com. rss “valleylist” through all top 10 internet services. it started with google reader and a very unprofessional response from yahoo because of technical problems with yahoo groups. print publishers are interested in “valleylist” first time in print and print syndication projects. the wordpress version is a lot better and reads like a new book from o’reilly. should bring in another 5 million readers this year.
i’m leading up to a wrap on the “valleylist” marketing project.
