call it “all the news that’s fit to print”.
.
the new york times is the “superbowl” of print media. venerated and popular. 1 million daily readers 7 days a week. the times is kept out of first place by newcomer usa today [2.4 million readers] and newscorp’s specialized financial news the century old wall street journal [2 million readers].
.
nyt digital [45.7m monthly visitors] is second only to yahoo news [47.2million] for internet users. nyt is so successful it’s on the verge of entering the internet top 10. everything from the new york times plus the ease and convenience of reaching 2.5 bilion internet users billions of email members millions of ereader subscribers and nearly a billion smartphone users. exclusive content. ease. convenience. reliability.
.
.
i published my first interview with nisenholtz in artcom magazine based on a visit new york and a stop at nyu. nisenholtz proselytized electronic publishing teletext videotext and creative uses of new technology.
.
new york times loyalists find comfort in avoiding becoming a “search” company to conquer the internet. other publishing and media companies in the internet top 10 include newscorp owner of the wall street journal and myspace and cbs owner of cnet and cbs interactive.

conceptualizing the scope of the new york times success requires some comparison to other top 10 mega successes. it’s like watching television’s american idol unaware it’s the top rated television program for the last 5 years. the times is up there with mash the final episode the top rated show of all time with 80% of television households. almost as popular as the real superbowl itself. compare the times to the rolling stones concerts that have 3 out of top 10 grossing concert tours ever [top tour 2005 at $162 million] or the biggest selling album of all time the eagles greatest hits [$29m] and you begin to get the picture. the new york times is like the fanatical success of wii play with remote [5.28m copies] or the movie titanic still the top grossing movie of all time [$800 million]. runner upthe dark knight was the top grossing movie of 2008 [only $530m]. after reading it’s back to cable’s #1 channel discovery [9.8 m viewers].

conclusion. digital publishing has come a long way since the early days when the cd-rom edition of grolier encyclopedia stole the show. from artcom where it was all art and technology i myself went on to the sf chronicle where it was public access information services and electronic publishing. nisenholtz went right from graduate school to the top of the class at the new york times.
the times continues to stand out as a success impossible to duplicate. nyt digital has a few important changes to make before it conquers the top 10 internet companies and becomes the number 1 source for news on the internet.
.
that’s what i would be doing if i were in charge.
