NEWSPAPERS STARTED IT ALL. it was here in san francisco that millionaire industrialist william randolph hearst started the newspaper publishing revolution. dad george hearst bought the sf examiner in 1880 and a few years later gave it to his son.

william launched an empire.

william randolph hearst the “valleylist” avatar this week is known for the lavish lifestyle that later came to characterize the 1920′s and was described in the movie citizen kane. the hearst public trust includes newspapers hearst castle philanthropic endowments and art museums.

at it’s apogee the newspaper business had almost 3,000 daily newspapers. the latest numbers say publishing declined to 1,408 daily newspapers with an average of 49 million in paid circulation. sunday editions of 902 papers reach around the same number of people that’s around 17% of the u.s.a.’s population.

area favorites from hearst didn’t make the top 10. the sf chronicle print edition comes in at #12 with 339,440 paid circulation. the sf examiner ranks #49 out of print newspapers with 186,335 paid circulation.

the largest newspaper companies have been at it for a very long time and four in particular seem destined to rule not only in print but on the internet as well.

ganette [1923] sent shock waves through the industry with usatoday. now running 74 daily newspapers with a total paid circulation of 5,994,347 ganette remains the largest. dow jones [1882] is second and as a newscorp subsidiary publishes only 20 newspapers with total daily paid circulation 2,311,966. the new york times [1851] shock wave impact on the newspaper industry comes from the digital edition shaking things up and carving out a new niche – - news consumers above average college education who use the internet a lot. the new york times now publishes 20 newspapers total daily paid circulation 2,252,610. hearst [1887] publishes only 12 newspapers and has total paid circulation of only 1,318,594. however hearst’s latest strategic move to reinvest in news publishing is a big success. everybody needs to see more from hearst with the turnaround of the sf chronicle print edition and sfgate.com. for more information consult top newspaper companies world wide and top newspapers world wide.

could it be that the newspaper publishing industry doth protest too much?

print newspapers are stabilizing. the winners are growing print circulation and adding advertising revenues from electronic publishing. the internet top 10 news sites tell the story.

industry winners fall into 3 groups. internet only. internet and newspaper. then internet and television. only yahoo and aol are pure internet. the new york times gannette and washington post have a print tie in. the other 5 have a television tie in – - the weather channel cnn msnbc weatherbug and the world news hour. news accounts for very large portion of internet search.

yet again newspapers are complaining that electronic readership surpassed print readership. didn’t we all hear that same complaint from the publishing giants around the same time last year?

“valleylist” thinks that newspaper publishers are understating their online audience. revenues from online sources officially look like 12%. unofficially it’s more like 19%. from the internet to all kinds of electronic publishing “valleylist” thinks the top 4 publishing companies are destined to rule the newspaper and internet worlds.

looks like ganette the wall street journal new york times and hearst are taking charge. they just need to battle it out with newcomers yahoo and aol and the same old rivals from the television news business.

in the meantime “valleylist” plans to rule the newsletter world.

conclusion. excitement from the newspaper publishing industry is a rare occurrence. in the business of digging up and reporting exciting news as it happens is the nature of the newspaper business. actual news from the newspaper industry is a welcome occurrence. yet it hardly ever happens. very high cost structure terribly competitive environment scarce writerly talent and an overly bloated publishing and news landscape make the industry difficult to grasp.

relative newcomer usatoday from ganette went right to the top with a new concept – - a national newspaper. reported locally edited regionally and actually sent by satellite to regional publishing and distribution companies usatoday is still the #1 newspaper in the united states.

all that’s missing is a high tech publishing magnate at the top of the usatoday command structure entertaining royalty and building castles.

nostalgia is not what it used to be.
