EMAIL didn’t just arrive overnight. it is a real invention. email is among the few internet products that did not come from newspaper publishing. the new york times in your inbox first thing monday seems inventive. however it’s the real invention of email that has changed history. forever. we’re talking person to person or person to group email distribution. nobody has ever seen anything quite like email before.
free.
arpanet the inventor of modern day email is the“valleylist” avatar this week. some credit bell labs or even early apple computer enthusiasts. the actual product was included in early database and bulletin board systems [bbs].
while arpanet is the official predecessor to the internet there’s a lot to be said for the enormous number of private and public information services that paved the way to the future.
background on the launch of the internet can be found in“valleylist” electronic banking and “valleylist” electronic commerce.
speaking of the department of defense.
bloomberg news says defense head robert gates resigned. so did his twin who also works for the fed. leon pantetta leaves the cia and is slated for the top defense job in 2011 while general david petraeus moves to the cia. the shake up is much hullabaloo about nothing. cause of the reassignments is bad policy decisions. wag the dog. make people disappear. force people to stay “in”. ruin everything. promise a brilliant future. end up in ruins. oversight.
promise everybody a big phone company legal case.
deliver top level resignations. use people. put totally unimportant phone company people in charge. continue to pretend it’s ok. ignore the obvious. cause problems. claim you’ll never go away. ever.
the gates twins need to take the “gang” and their 500 phone company followers with them.
that’s just what i needed.

data bases and bbs. those who claim that email started the internet revolution would be wrong. bulletin board systems like homebrew and fidonet were the first actual online consumer systems. arpa then darpa were set up to help the department of defense fight the cold war. instead they came up with communication standards and networking technology that lead to the modern day internet. email protocols were among arpa’s many important technological accomplishments.
aol was probably the first commercial email service.
yahoo mail was among the first free commercial email services. yahoo still leads with 70 million users.
experts claim email is still the internet’s most popular application. 294 billion emails are mailed every day. 1.88 billion people use email world wide.
email technology has languished because of java apps that don’t work and social search overload. good idea is special relationships with email contacts. yet again yahoo takes the lead with an easy to use app that is just too confusing. chief yahoo jerry yang must be designing new technology again.
“outlook” the desktop email product did the microsoft thing. almost became number 1. still too difficult to use.
“valleylist” planned new titles takes a new turn.
a new focus on old media gone digital. newspaper publishers made the internet their new home. movie people are selling product through internet dowload at an unprecedented rate. at the same time movies and television use digital technology to come up with new and innovative programming content.
electronic publishing articles are now online while “valleylist” wraps up with “email”.

planned titles and sponsorship is online. up next. digital film television and video. new sponsors needed. cash only. any starbucks after 5pm.
the “valleylist” publishing schedule sets dates for new editions. new this week live music. sf yourself to attend bay to breakers 5.15 and gay pride 6.27. otherwise wait until 7.4 so the fed can keep you warm. i opted out of the local project. too many people.
hugh jackman celebrity sighting near curran theatre was fun. other non-event this weekend. too much work. “home of the fuutre” [utopia manque] project. gallery art auction 5.12. join everything. internet rating services [or bookmarking services] want to pick up your latest article or blog for world wide distribution. millions waiting.
next. digital movies film and video.
without facts to back me up i’m conjecturing that movies film and television are a lot bigger than electronic publishing. film and video outpace the internet as far as exciting new product. the summer blockbuster season coming up is a high point impossible to imitate.
electronic publishing people should take new content and innovative new products as seriously as hollywood.
even better than the real thing. two of the top grossing concerts of all time [2001 $110m and 2005 $140m] belong to u2. u2 is mega hollywood style entertainment.360 is still touring. and now this. u2 the “valleylist” shake rattle and roll act of the week.
