MOVIES FILM AND VIDEO came my way with a live interview on abc. you’ll see me preparing for the benefit auction and painting a new picture at the hospitality house studio. the new painting ”home of the future” (utopia manque) is for the “utopia” show scheduled for 5.27. deadline for all utopia paintings friday 5.13.
was it a movie camera filming me using 35mm film transferred then edited on 1″ video tape to end up a 1 minute video segment on local channel 7? certainly not a digital camera or camcorder. television likes large format movie cameras for clarity of image and picture quality. professional photographic quality film cameras are still the favorite. the all digital future has a ways to go. technically speaking.
louis lumiere inventor of the motion picture camera and projection system [the cinematographe] is the “valleylist” avatar this week. lumiere showcased his invention and presented 10 short films in 1895 at the grand cafe in paris. it was the first ever public viewing of movies. though others came up with motion picture devices around the same time lumiere is officially credited with coming up with movies for public viewing by a live audience. the “grand cafe” debut was the first ever and included documentary and entertainment films. the publicity campaign featured what experts consider the first ever movie poster. lumiere thought film and movies were doomed. the entire lumiere family did a world tour screening their new films for important people and continued to produce films and perfect the movie camera and projector. the lumiere catalogue grew to include thousands of films.
lumiere’s invention [the cinematographe] made it possible for titanic ($800m) and the dark knight ($530m) to become the top grossing films of all time. same could be said for the top grossing movies of 2010 transformers revenge of the fallen [$400m] and harry potter and the 1/2 blood prince [$302m]. the great classics citizen kane (1944) and the godfather (1972) however remain the best movies of all time according to the american film institute.
most of the top 10 information for this compilation comes from the new york times world almanac 2011.
movie theatres opened the door to movie rentals and in 2009 the top dvd rentals were taken and the curious case of benjamin button.
television movies and films reach millions through top cable networks tbs [100m subscribers] and the discovery channel [99m subscribers]. programming created exclusively for television produced it’s own winners. #1 rated talent show american idol is the primetime favorite as well as the highest rated television program for 2010. america’s favorite syndicated program 2010 was espn nfl regular season and season 2. the all time most watched television programs ever remain superbowl xliv and mash the last episode. all time highest rated television programs ever are made for television dramas mash the last episode and dallas who shot jr.
top television networks [broadcast or cable] are fox and abc. internet top video sites are youtube and vimeo. lumiere would be thrilled with cent’s pick for top digital cameras from cannonand nikon. even more exciting are the top digital video camcorders from kodak and sony. top cable news programs went to fox news with a sweep of the top 10 featuring #1 the oreilly factor and #2 hannity.
21st century television is experiencing technical innovations so huge broadcasters and viewers are required to convert to a new digital standard. digital conversion is a world wide phenomenon. the fcc requires american consumers to purchase a digital converter. cut over to the new system was officially completed on june 12 2009.
high definition television [hdtv] has a million or 2 million pixels per frame. traditional analogue televisions display far less. consumers like flat panel televisions and digital displays however hdtv accounts for less than 10% of television set purchases.
digital broadcast looks good on standard television sets and exceptional on high definition television displays.
what’s the difference? movies are more popular culture than ever. television needs personalities to sell the news effectively. films come from europe or film school graduates and are often difficult to enjoy. television is the great equalizer. the digital conversion is only partially completed inspite of the fcc’s reassurances. end-to-end digital is the objective. each viewing household should be identifiable and specifically addressable thanks to digital broadcast technology. digital technology allows video producers to specifically address each pixel on the television screen opening the door to entirely new forms of video content.
still in transition.
