TELEVISION NETWORKS define television. these days it should be digital.

bestbuy says digital television is a reality. thank the fcc. the objective is all digital programming. the television set itself will include the necessary digital reception and decoding hardware and software. unofficially the u.s.a. lags at around 60% digital conversion.

for digital internet and movie film and video download services on your own private teevee – - it’s kind of a mess out there.

two solutions. buy a tivo premiere high def dvr equipped with the needed movie film and video services then try to route your internet service through tivo to get it to your television. or as bestbuy demonstrated go samsung big screen hd smart tv. includes all the needed plug ins such as ”app” download and web browser as well as all the leading download services accessible directly from your gorgeous plasma tv. picture in picture so you don’t miss a moment of your favorite television program.

60% and counting. a rather patchy array of digital services added to television sets and related hardware. the fcc should be doing better.

the internet is an astonishing new form of popular culture. it came from the federal government. email is still the most popular internet service. some like end-user-generated content. most would agree that “dead end search” almost killed the internet. compelling content continues to turn the internet itself into a high growth highly profitable business.

no affiliates or daily programming schedule. just a ton of digital content for millions world wide.

there are in fact more internet customers world wide than there are cable television customers.

william s paley ceo of cbs radio and television networks for 50 years and television pioneer is the “valleylist” avatar this week. paley is credited with developing and successfully implementing the “network” concept that continues to be the basis for the mutli-billion dollar broadcast television business. paley took control of the company shortly after purchasing cbs stock and selling some of his family’s cigar store stock to fund the purchase in 1928. paley stayed in control of the company until his death in 1990. credited also with helping cbs first turn a profit in 1953 and managing the company through enormous growth few can compare to paley when it comes to acquiring top notch talent and developing breakthrough programming. cbs was the number 1 television network for many decades. also active in new york social and museum circles paley was among the founding members of the museum of modern art in 1929 and a founding member of the museum of television and radio in 1976 who provided the seed money needed to start the broadcast museum project.

the 4th network fox has replaced cbs and nbc for news programming. vertical channels like espn hbo and qvc hsn are very popular. the much need 4th network fox is a rousing success. television is perhaps the highest growth industry of the 20thcentury. next up. internet.

television’s newcomers are serving up movies sports shopping and entertainment.

the news and products mentioned in this edition of “valleylist” are included in the youtube playlist and favorite videos.

mega mergers have redefined the landscape. abc capital cities disney [$rev 40b] almost a decade ago was the first effort to get as big as some of the cable programming giants. comcast-nbc [$rev 40b] just a few years ago resulted in a similarly immense company. time warner turner broadcasting [$rev 27.5b] decided to get as big as possible right away literally acquiring the entire turner broadcasting empire to keep the revenue and customer growth going up. murdoch’s newscorp fox media empire[$rev 32.55b] is almost as big though totally different.

television networks are still the same as during the paley era. local stations have lost ground to central programming. cbs nbc abc which makes them more important than ever and very powerful. network affiliates are still the dominant life form in the local area. nbc got to be number 1 thanks to innovative new programming and growth in local affiliate stations.

from a network point of view the industry has nothing really new to announce since fox and usa network were launched in the 1980s.

july 4th was a chance to catch up on the chow and find a bluff for fireworks viewing. san francisco outdid itself again with colors beyond the wizard of oz rainbow. terrorist threat was at an all time low. still i would have preferred a simple family style picnic with all the trimings. the italian side of the family does the best food and fireworks on digital television look good enough.

“talk to the people who show up” is the real answer. the confusatory thrust of the 21stcentury coming from law enforcement is wrong. this “gang” likes to send the wrong people to try to force people to “walk away”. they mean they are trying to drive people away and send them off by themselves so that they end up alone. under the auspices of tom ridge of pennsylvania and former vice president dick cheney this “gang” has adopted a prison philosophy to isolate then destroy people. still suffering from the republican beer bust gone bad and needing a good love hangover remedy we’re left to wonder what obama and the democrats are doing playing their game. the voting public is yet again left out of it and subjected to horrifying abuse at the hands of elected officials and government officials. worse they upper echelon is all foreign nationals hellbent on a “cheap seats” solution to american politics and the fed knows better than to keep those idiots around when things turn bad. “no help at all” says taxpayer paid fbi director robert “hood” mueller trying to stick america with a bad deal. instead mueller should resign and join cheney in south america where everybody else went to experiment with dictatorship as a form of government. bush promised his “gang” would cut back to 5% of their pre-jihad level of misery and suffering.

instead it’s another day of “somebody stop me”.

stop.

many of us are still in awe of the massive success of network television and the television networks that led to a new and successful popular culture product. live talent costumes blocking camera equipment and commercials have resulted in a new entertainment industry dwarfed only perhaps by the movie industry itself.

it’s not that way in europe . france has 3 channels and they are dull. england has 3 different channels and they are equally dull. american television seeks to entertain and excite people. occasionally even prompt ordinary citizens to action.

the internet generation needs somebody as big and bad as william s paley.
