DIGITAL RADIO SATELLITE RADIO finds the world dominated by radio. lots of new digital services. the “valleylist” top 10 radio stations ever world wide includes a few so popular they eventually went defunct. cause. fierce competition. size is not the defining factor in radio. a big footprint is among the many reasons for success in the mass media.
radio and musical instruments including voice are still largely analogue.
that’s a surprise. with lots of money there’s plenty of opportunity to go digital. the risk is loosing your entrenched audience in the meantime. like the television digital conversion let’s get the government to help radio go digital. “valleylist” says anything besides the same old gang on the same old radio doing the same old songs in the same order.
that’s the old school of automating radio.
no on air personality needed. cut costs. stick with top 40 from syndicated services. buy your programming from expensive experts and save on personnel costs.
in fact successful radio requires real personalities that play just the best music around.
howard stern shock jock and satellite radio pioneer is the “valleylist” avatar this week. from podunk college radio to world wide acclaim stern has gone as far as to designate himself “king of all media”. what makes stern different is the real radio personality that nobody can duplicate. try stealing the shocking format or bitter banter and you end up with milktoast programming and bad taste. stern makes bad taste look good. it was radio philadelphia that made stern mega famous with a multi-million dollar deal to do just what the #$^*# he felt like doing. legal problems lawsuits federal intervention canceled contract – - stern prevailed. for the high technology sector it’s stern’s big investment in digial satellite radio that has made a big impression. lot’s of monymoneybbing low life’s make it big in radio. very few actually make a contribution industry. was it give back or even bigger money? stern will never tell.
the fcc is promising to bring more digital radio to millions yearning to live free.

conclusion. satellite radio is like a “champagne super nova” in that it suggests radio programming that is just too good to believe. and in reality it is almost that good. millions find it worth the monthly fee. however most don’t.
the top satellite radio services are plagued with syndicated programming and lots of stuff you’ve heard before. winners stand out in a crowd and fight hard every day to impress. even satellite radio requires top notch personalities that bring loyal listeners. add in the high tech early adopters who need all of the latest high tech anyway and you have the start of a new radio business.
“valleylist” is wondering when normal terrestrial radio will go digital. analogue radio for the car or for the home works just fine. too many commercials.
then there’s competition from internet radio services.
oasis top 10 hits champagne supernova or wonderwall on the internet. almost gets you all the way there.
who needs satellite radio anyway.
