CONSUMER MULTI-MEDIA AND DATA CHANNELS go right to the home. historically communications evolved from the marconi wireless telegraph [not a consumer technology] to radio telephone television wireless and now the internet. all facilitated by the federal post office with mail services guaranteed to each and every home. news magazines books then records music cds dvds delivered right to the home. marketing sales purchases and billing all facilitated by federally funded mail services.

do it with email instead and save billions.

that’s reaching everybody electronically. perhaps the federal government could put the email address right next to each voter or citizens name. there’s a unique email address for each and every american citizen. instead the fed is messing around social re-engineering and messing things up. as usual. need a reliable 3rd party vendor the size of aol or google to solve that easy-to-solve email problem.

steve case founder of aol and internet pioneer is the “valleylist” avatar this week.

can’t really say enough about steve case and the maniacal drive to the top starting with america online text only version competing with compuserve and delphi to president and ceo of time-warner. impressive and yet not really through. as an aol customer i was always impressed by the multi-media features and emphasis on email and information publishing. even aol wasn’t able to definitively solve the online security problem. it is all too easy to break in on a connection and ruin e-v-e-r-y-thing. the internet has taken extra steps to provide online safety. there’s still a lack of real safety. no active reporting agency when it comes to online transactions. just call the police and email the fcc.

i am among the many stunned to find myself victimized as the result of an aol connection. just like in a bad grade “b” movie the incident has totally ruined my life. as planned.

steve case has done it all. successfully. he was even behind the sf based initiative to reengineer society. it’s really taking too long. 11 years later the same players are making mincement of their clients. it gives people a new concept of keeping the client hostage. cancelled. other reengineering firms do it better.

other big mistake was not pulling off the successful time-warner multi-media and data channel play. instead lots of new members and moving content around. “valleylist” suggests steve launch a competitor to the internet not unlike aol at it’s peak. really give the government and other world powers a run for the money. for more information read “valleylist” aol the special edition and i read the news today oh boy [henry luce].

steve case and aol time-warner were the biggest mutli-media and data channel company ever.

until the internet.

analysis. multi-media content to the home is currently the exclusive province of the internet. no other data channels around. with television then radio going digital there’s a big opportunity to go multi-media all around. television or radio could be the next frontier in delivering multi-media content to the home. multi-media works very well for cell phones. internet email texting video photographs and music work fine on cell phones. most consumer data channels use the phone line anyway. cell phone multi-media is natural.

the objective of putting everybody on the internet would be a lot easier with digital multi-media available at low cost on any broadcast or telephone based service. get your email through the latest internet radio service for example. the home of the future requires at least one video screen. probably more. and what drives the technology is consumer interest in news and entertainment.

new content formats for multi-media are lagging behind the actual digital technology.

“valleylist” is lining up the digital future. the series of articles on electronic publishing is online. digital “movies film and video“ has a lot of articles that many describe as “gone digital”. electronic and digital music says a lot based on pop culture leading up to a beatles bonus track.

have to read the articles to find out if the digital revolution is yet complete.

my latest artwork is on display at 1009 market street with open studios sf. a weekend adventure in art took in the mission street open studios 24th and mission which featured the new location of modern times bookstore and the wonderland gallery. the triple base gallery surprised everybody with their 2×2 roomand other 2×2 artwork. only thing more interesting the next day was the opening of the harvey milk photo center with 60 artists and photography training and dark room for members. ben fong torres gave a live reading at books inc of his new title on the eagles. fong-torres spun tales about rolling stone magazine’s softball game with the eagles. eagles won. fong-torres claims the eagles started out as a linda ronstadt back up band. david geffen people signed the group unseen and launched the eagles on asylum records.

conclusion. the current cycle of consumer multi-media marketing peaked with aol’s acquisition of time-warner. potentially the biggest mutli-media and data channel play of all time. it didn’t work out. today aol is a separate company with most of it’s content on the internet. time-warner tbs is a cable news and entertainment powerhouse.

in steps google.

only the product is search.

multi-media content is a secondary consideration. the size of google’s internet service and email customer base puts the stanford-based company on top of the multi-media top 10 companies in the world.

if only google would pay attention to multi-media content. youtube is pioneering video service gmail is rated the best internet email product perhaps next is google’s online photo service and then hardware. “valleylist” is thinking of a company as big as the bbc. make the move into the mutli-media content and data channel services area. world wide. for the usa it could be nbc cbs abc or time-warner tbs. newscorps’s fox broadcasting is already there with myspace mutli-media and entertainment. newscorp doesn’t have a data channel company yet to try an integrated approach.

2 billion people or almost 1/3 of the planet’s population use the internet.

data channel services are provided almost exclusively by land-line and cellular telephone companies. consumer data channels like aol or google dsl through digital broadcast signal for radio or television could easily double that number.

everything everybody on the internet.

everybody has a life-time email address.

finally computers at less than $100.

everybody gets an avatar and endorses “valleylist”.
