CIVILIAN SPACE TRAVEL takes advantage of the latest new technology.
outer space is very high tech. the success of low cost high speed civilian airlines like hawaiin or southwest suggests there’s a market for space travel. what’s it like? fly into outer space. circle the earth a few times. do some sightseeing. admire truely stellar objects like the solar system and the entire milky way.
so far only 17 civilians have traveled to outer space. Most worked alongside trained russian cosmonauts and had little time for sightseeing. dennis tito became famous as the world’s first “space tourist”. a $20 million flight and a week aboard the russian spacecraft soyuz international space station. if the era of civilian spaceflight has a birthday it’s april 28 2001. mark shuttleworth south african billionaire was next in 2002 at a cost of $20 million. charles simonyi was the fifth space tourist and the second hungarian in space also paying $20 million for a week aboard the space station in 2009. in march 2009 aboard soyez-tma-14 simonvi made a second trip. guy laliberté was the last civilian space tourist in 2009 spending 11 days at the soyez international space station. cost of only $35 million.
american civilians have traveled to outer space with mixed results. u.s. senator jake gary o utah 1985 was the first. prince sultan salman abdelazize al-saud flew also in 1985. however nasa’s teacher in space christa mcauliffe [1986] died on the ill fated challenger voyage that blew up just after launch and brought an end to america’s guest astronaut program. the “civilian in space” program was abandoned after the 1986 challenger tragedy. teacher christa mcauliffe a new hampshire high-school teacher and six astronauts were killed when the challenger space shuttle exploded shortly after takeoff. after mcauliffe nasa started working with shuttleworth to make a new april deadline.
read the encyclopedia article civilians in space. n’synch singer lance bass was a potential civilian astronaut yet got dropped by nasa at the last minute. most consider the simonvi outer space excursions the most interesting.
end of space shuttle program in 2011 brings end of important era in american space travel.
for us space tourists. no real destination. a few special gravity effects. weightlessness. approaching the surpassing the speed of sound. the space station for an overnighter. lunar orbit. an extended stay? a lunar touch down for a week of out-of-the-world sightseeing.
there’s a lot that could be done yet space travel is still a nacient industry.
yuri gagarin soviet cosmonaut and first human to journey into outer space is the “valleylist” avatar this week. the vostok space craft completed one orbit in 1961 before returning safely to earth. he served as backup crew to the soyuz 1 mission (which ended in a fatal crash). gagarin later became deputy training director of the cosmonaut training centre outside moscow which was later named after him. gagarin died in 1968 when a mig 15 training jet he was piloting crashed.

analysis. technology and consumer needs don’t necessarily overlap. is it possible to create an interest in civilian space travel? sell a lot of tickets and lower the cost-per-ticket from $200,000 to say around $1,500 round trip. “valleylist” estimates the price demand curve should reach an almost mass market. that’s a lot of consumer marketing just fill 0 gravity seats and make people see stars. for more information read “valleylist” outer space. throw in a few destinations or official “stops” along the way. plan for comfort. include “weekend in orbit” option. voila. almost a consumer business.

“home of the future” should also be in the picture. the series of articles on electronic publishing is online. digital “movies film and video“ has a lot of articles that many describe as “gone digital”. electronic and digital music says a lot based on pop culture leading up to a beatles bonus track.
have to read the articles to find out if the digital revolution is yet complete.

conclusion. dick cheney secretly announced plans to retire permently from politics. instead of following in the footsteps of diplomat cyruss vance cheney ended up the dark lord of the new century. many claim it started and ended with the enron political scandal.

maybe that’ll free up george bush to run for the senate next round.
clintons bill and hillary continue to promote space travel and colonization. high tech everywhere on earth. multi-national space hubs and lunar landings as a stop over on the way to martian canals and cities. obama almost shut down and decommissioned the nasa space program for lack of a real focus.
technologically speaking civilian space travel is a compelling new industry. the phenomenal expense of putting people into space needs to be mittigated by building a real active market for space travel.
today it’s an expensive novelty.
