CRAIGSLIST – - THE SPECIAL EDITION. a big success from a consumer point of view yet business people wonder about craigslist. founder and owner craig newmark will tell you that his internet service is in the u.s.a. top 27 for internet usage. a real san francisco company craigslist has retained its community service and “non-commercial” purpose.
what people like is that classified site craigslist will publish almost anything for anybody. free to use it’ll cost $25 a week to reach millions. and they get results. consumers are turned off by the lack of editorial intervention. they are surprised when they find a wild experience with almost anybody on the other end of that classified announcement.

craigslist sued over erotic-services ads
in fact craigslist is a little too wild for most people.
while newmark claims craigslist is #7 worldwide in terms of english-language page views a lot of us are not convinced. the internet top 10 leaves craigslist out. the alexa u.s.a. #27 ranking monthly individual visitors is most likely the real story. that means craigslist is a big success.
the craigslist advertiser program explains their world wide numbers as “four billion pages in the craigslist community are viewed from visitors to websites numbering ten billion (give or take). it only takes a small amount of effort on the part of those utilizing craigslist’s advertising opportunities to reach a more substantial number of people.”
over 20 billion page views per month craigslist is #7 in page views with 50 million in the u.s.a. alone and 40 million new classified ads each month plus 1 million new job listings each month. add to that craigslist discussion forums that include 120 million user postings in 100 topical forums expanded to more than 570 craigslist sites in 50 countries also in french german italian portugese and spanish. craigslist could be making a lot more money.

craig newmark might be avatar du jour this week however don’t let craigslist’s folksyness discourage you. craigslist was started as a “newsgroup” moderated by founder craig newmark in 1996. craigslist was incorporated as a non-profit in 1999. jim buckmaster became ceo in 2000. 30 craigslisters work out of a victorian house in the inner sunset neighborhood of san francisco.
newmark says they kept the “.org” domain as an important symbol of the non-commercial nature of the service. ebay acquired 25% of the equity in craigslist from a former shareholder in august of 2004.
revenues come from ad fees for job in 18 cities and “brokered nyc apartments adult and therapeutic services” says the craigslist factsheet.
craigslist facebook is interesting however try the craigslist foundation on facebook for those really interested in public service.
no competition makes craigslist an unbelievably valuable internet property earning nearly $97 million a year. rather than try to grow and max out with a stock offering craigslist remains privately held. the real action can be found at the city or regional level. sfbay is a good example of what craigslist people like. those who follow the internet probably recall the bitter war between ebay and craigslist.

taking aim at craigslist - – time
the result is newmark and his team run the company. ebay and other imitators are trying to catch up. the secret is craigslist got there first came up with a totally unheard of strategy. the ebay play is an old problem. the real craigslist problem these days is keeping the business growing and finding new revenue.
it’s a crazy kind of business. it’s like most classified advertising. people trying to buy and sell. find things. yet again it’s search and indexing that need a total redesign. however there’s a need that the big guys can’t fill which is craigslist will publish almost any kind of classified.
the real challenge will be for craigslist to find a way to also grow revenue while keeping customers from jumping ship to more traditional classifieds publications.
MAYOR OF THE WEEK is pacifica’s mayor julie lanselle. with transportation projects completed pacifica’s high tech future looks good. it’s pacifica city council [o'connellk@ci.pacifica.ca.us] that will tell you there’s little in pacifica besides fun things to do and great beaches. in fact pacifica promotes itself with 50 great things about pacifica. famous for beaches “pacifica is also the home of three golden gate national recreation areas – - milagra ridge sweeney ridge and mori point. all three areas afford hiking and panoramic views of the pacific ocean.” my very brief visit to the rockaway beach plaza was so exciting the fire department decided to send a truck just in case anything really happened.
try also the coastside farmers market adobe plaza the crespi business district eureka square fairmont shopping center Linda mar shopping center pacific manor shopping area palmetto business district park mall pedro point shopping center ramallah plaza vallemar center.
the pacifica chamber of commerce says pacifica is a tourist kind of destination. “valleylist” thinks pacifica looks good with high tech potential for ”green power” and oceanographic projects.
away from the beach those of us held hostage in san jose this week tried to sneak into the search engine strategies conference & expo from the people at searchenginewatch.com. the search business is going through an enormous upheaval caused by revenue and technical problems. the conference brought 4-6 thousand search strategists to town. for some reason conference visitors stayed off the streets.
NEW FEATURE EVERY WEEK gets a little tiresome and jet lagged. food for weary travelers is not really what it should be. my only visit to phoenix arizona was what you might expect – - a giant hotel so big it seems to encompass the entire city. phoenix population 1,448,000 is the 5th largest city in the u.s.a. and arizona with 6.0 million people is the 16th largest state. the scorching heat over 100 all day prevents tourists like myself from finding a phoenix public library or the phoenix chamber of commerce.
it’s reading a newspaper that leads people to think up odd new ideas like why don’t i visit the 10 largest cities in the u.s.a. sometime soon.

NEWS NEEDS TO BE NEW (sm)
>ok i’m almost as crazy as craig newmark with my interest in “new” technology and a belief that there is somebody after me. i got my start with a brief mention in entrepreneur magazine in 2000 for the ”free banner exchange megalist” [set aside in favor of travel]. in fact there are a few people after me because they would like to try to make me disappear. is it somebody i met through craigslist?
no it’s a group of people.
therron abbott bill long john barnette firoze doctor leon kreiger laurel buck barbara randalette neal polacheck ted west david flores ted c. and the other phone company people who don’t know when to stop.
these people are convinced that if you finally fall through a trap at the phone company then they need to find a way to hunt you down until you are eliminated. in fact after you are eliminated you change your name and they “put you to work”. and when they put you to work it’s because you were “stupid enough to stay in with the same people”. in fact they are confused because people need to avoid staying in with the ”wrong people”. they are apparently still angry that they got into trouble and plan to continue to take out their anger on everybody else. it is an immense disaster for those who are still not over their mistake of “staying in with the wrong people”.
the other irony with this group of people is that they were offered an immense buy out. they were causing trouble. even the police were complaining. instead they decided to take the money and then focus exclusively on their concept of “someday it’ll be legal to hunt people down and have them eliminated for no reason”. to this very day it remains totally illegal. this “gang” has used this con to fleece people in many different cities. they get innocent people arrested. the police will tell you to walk away because this group of people is too dangerous and they threaten people.
craigslist demonstrates the importance of coming up with a totally new concept. finding big success in an area that is typically not a big winner on the internet – - classifieds – - requires a strategy that’s difficult to imitate. craig himself is a special case. craigslist can end up a harrowing walk on the wild side. for some it ends up an exhausting dead end. reality is craigslist works well for most people.
