MAILING LISTS have launched many a new empire. and then to everybody’s amazement the newly elected sell their lists to other companies. are they offering their customers up to the competition?

“valleylist” recommends that people grow their own mailing lists.

in fact you need to have a very compelling publication or new offer to compete with the established winner. try taking “life” magazine’s mailing list and selling them your new internet magazine. lots of luck! as a result mailing lists come as a added revenue stream to publishers. additionally publishers are not required to sell to the competition. probably a better idea to sell them to companies that do a lot of business from mailing lists yet do not compete with your product. make no mistake mailing lists and especially email lists are a very powerful marketing tool.

david letterman the obvious avatar du jour this week does not sell his mailing list. who can compete with letterman’s stupid pet tricks.

however you can catch the latest letterman from the youtube fan club or follow the cbs superstar letterman himself at twitter @lettemanfs. early adopters can request tickets online. there’s also more letterman on facebook at late show with david letterman. everybody has their favorite letterman guest. “valleylist” says it has to be drew barrymore brave enough to dance on letterman’s desk.

it’s the conversion rate that matters. from 10,000 letters or emails you got 4 clients then that is a very low conversion rate. according to the direct marketing association the mailing list industry suffers from a very low conversion rate. this is a common problem for people who purchase 3rd party mailing lists.

however keeping and effectively managing your own mailing list is a needed business process that adds value. grow your own mailing lists and bring in new customers that then can be used to book revenue. choose what’s guide to email marketing software & service providers is a good start for do-it-yourselfers.

subscribing to industry news alerts is what got “valleylist” and lots of other ambitious entrepreneurs to their first disney land cable television convention. that’s where i first meet high rollers like people from cbs interactive [les moonvies people]. now there’s a company that lost tons of money on schiesters then had to spend a fortune buying their way into the internet business and purchasing cnet. great thing about those disney people is everybody walks away with a present. that way there are no complaints over being publicly humiliated at the hotel cocktail hour or by the media snooping or from being talked about in public by competitor companies looking for a fight. nobody complains over bad food. most important everybody loves disney afterward.

MAYOR OF THE WEEK

from los gatos is mike wasserman  mwasserman@losgatosca.gov for coming up with the most attractive cute little town in silicon valley. one of santa clara county‘s oldest cities it’s population these days is a little over 27,000. not easy given the immense pressures to commercialize and go high tech and most of all gentrify instead of giving people lots of great places to spend money. the metro points out lots favorite dining & restaurants though the hot happening scene is “over 3,000 businesses serve the residents and act as a destination point for visitors who are attracted to its restaurants, hotels and variety of shops within a pedestrian oriented downtown setting”. downtown los gatos is listed on the national register of historic places. those tired or spending too much on too little stop by the los gatos public library or the los gatos chamber of commerce.

great place for a weekend get away from high tech high stress and high pressure city problems.

NEW FEATURE EVERY WEEK focuses on dallas texas population 1,232,000. east texas is livestock and oil country. however a high tech boom and lots of investment in green power technology such as solar and wind have changed the business climate. dallas nightlife will keep you busy and empty out your wallet faster than a wind farm. for the morning after try a long drive to nowhere and a sanity stop at a dallas public library or the dallas chamber of commerce.

i think of the aaron eckhart movie “in the company of men“ focused on torturing the office secretary blessed with a mild speech disability in a particulary sadistic way. they did it to entertain themselves. it was the most horrifying thought ever. now it’s daily occurrence.

reminiscent of dallas the truely great television series. often mentioned and never imitated “dallas” launched a million zillion nasty and cruel stars including larry hagman and a madcap cast that belong only in a fictional television series.

“valleylist” thinks judge a city [and a marketing plan] for the 10 largest cities in the u.s.a. by the publications.

my visit to dallas was to escape from the phone company. dallas served up a few too many business meetings. lots of money spent in bars on the way to finding a restaurant. it’s hot and muggy only the city really hums like there’s something going on. dinner with volt information sciences was the high point only there’s a limit to what people are willing to pay for a steak dinner. inflated prices and problems with oil and high tech industries have left the dallas economy in a tailspin year after year. high tech moved in behind pioneering company texas instruments and their historic firsts in high tech

-         – the electronic calculator and high performance silicon processors.

texas instruments current problems are indicative of the problems the city of dallas  has with managing a new economy.

back at the phone company a week later it’s the firestorm at the branch davidian complex in waco texas only a 100 miles from dallas and whatever you do said my boss peggy stay away from waco.

there is only one ”valleylist” and here it is.
